Selling Shoes
Written by William Tomasch (03/2000)

The Metzenseifner shoemakers sold their shoes at the market. Typical models were the so-called "chicken". They were rather big shoes. These shoes were matched by fitting them with thatch.
One day this story happened at the market:
Hopedisch, one of the shoemakers, exhibit his shoes in order of size. When he sold a pair of shoes he put the money in a special one of these shoes, the first one. Each customer would bargain like the devil with Hopedisch in order to get a good price.
A Hungarian swindler observed Hopedisch. He had observed precisely what price Hopedisch wanted to get for the shoes while watching Hopedisch sell some pairs of the shoes. Then the swindler went to him with the exactly amount of money, pointed to the first pair and asked: "What is the price of these shoes?".
Shoemaker Hopedisch told him his price. There upon the swindler promptly put the money in his hand, took the shoes and vanished in the crowded market place. Now Hopedisch wanted to put the money in his "fund" and realized that he had just sold the shoes. He lamented "Schu men Gelt fakaaft" (Shoes with money sold) and called "Bo es da Moon?" (Where is the man?). But the customer could not be found in the market place. Hopedisch had sold his fund with his earnings.
